Monumental Sculptor Richard Serra Passes Away at 85

His future wife Nancy Graves had introduced him to composer Phil Glass, who spent time with conductor Nadia Boulanger. He soon discovered an even worthier source of influence. In Italy, he vowed to completely abandon painting, instead turning his attention toward sculpting full-time.
Excellent early examples include Terminal, a 40ft trapezium comprised of four enormous sheets of rolled steel created for documenta VI 1977. Seen from the viewing gallery above, these eight enormous works of weathered steel curve, fold and torque with a fluidity that belies the supposed rigidity of their material, spiralling like pieces of card or ribbon. As with his Terminal sculpture, The Matter of Time demands a phenomenological approach and as such Serra has meticulously planned the position of each work in relation to one another to ensure that viewers move between them as he intended.
The scale of these structures determines the flow of visitors and transforms their spatial experience, to the point of losing them in their labyrinthine meanderings.
Still, one characteristic color remains, that of the rust of weathering steel, also known as Corten steel, which has eventually become his signature. The term sublime is to be understood in its original meaning, as the artwork raises our awareness about the fragility of mankind in the face of the omnipotence of the world, in the manner of 19th-century German Romantic painters, such as Caspar David Friedrich.
